Akiaba Stewart is the 19th Mayor of the historic Town of Fairmount Heights. She was sworn into office in May 2023. She only served on the Council for a year prior to winning the Mayor seat. She is a proud 4th generation resident of the Town and has been a part of the community for over 52 years. The mother of 2 young men, she prides herself on raising them to become productive members of society. She graduated from Fairmont Heights Senior High School before going on to earn her associate degree from Prince Goerges County Community College.
At the age of 9 years old, she was attacked by 3 dogs on her way to the school bus stop in the Town of Fairmount Heights. After years of being afraid of dogs, she was determined not to allow her fear of dogs to stop her from becoming the 1st female canine officer for the Federal Protective Service. Mayor Stewart has been a lifelong advocate of giving back to the community and dedicated endless hours serving for her church, her community, mentoring young adults, coaching youth basketball and now a public servant. She served as the basketball commissioner for the Capitol Heights Boys and Girls Club.
She brings a wealth of innovative ideas to help take the Town to the next level; her goals are to address the Towns aging infrastructure, make the community safer, reduce blight and promote smart economic development. The Mayor is dedicated to listening to every voice and committed to caring for and lifting-up our residents. The Town of Fairmount Heights is not getting a full or part time Mayor, their getting a committed Mayor.
